Can You Learn Guitar On Your Own?

Do you want to know if you can learn guitar on your own? The simple answer is YES. However, it must be said; you cannot just pick up a guitar from scratch and start playing your favorite rock classic.

If you want to learn guitar on your own, it will require a learning strategy, some determination, patience and lots of practice.

However, I do have some good news for you. There’s a slow way and a fast way of learning guitar on your own that I will explain in more detail below how to do it the fast way.

The Slow Way

The slow way of learning guitar yourself is going pure cold turkey and trying to figure it out on your own.

Most people usually attempt to do this by watching endless videos on YouTube. Can you learn guitar on your own doing this? Yes, you can.

But, it takes time. A long time.

Finding the right YouTube videos or channel can take time; and in most cases only offer so much information for free and will eventually require some online lessons of some sort that requires some payment.

There’s some good content on YouTube, don’t get me wrong; but you will spend hours trying to piece together lessons from different teachers, videos and channels; which can be a bit of a mess.

I think there’s a better way.

The Fast Way

Can You Learn Guitar on Your Own?

Online guitar lessons are in my opinion the quickest and most affordable way to learning guitar on your own.

There’s a lot of online guitar lessons available these days; but only a select few really worth considering.

I have a full post done where I go into detail of each of the guitar courses I recommend and which one would work for you.

You can find that post HERE.

Why Should You Get A Online Guitar Course?

If you want to learn to play guitar yourself; you will find that having a structured plan to follow that works has a much better chance of success.

An online guitar course like Guitar Tricks; should have you playing guitar very well in less than 6 months.

6 months is not a long time to learn guitar; since learning guitar does a long time to master.

If you were to try and learn solely on your own; I think it will take you at least 12-18 months to start playing guitar well.

Which One Would I Recommend?

If I had to choose; I would say Guitar Tricks. I won’t go into too much detail as I have a full Guitar Tricks Review you should read. It will give you a more in depth view of what you are getting.

In short, Guitar Tricks offers the best guitar content with over 11,000 videos of how to learn guitar from beginner level right up to advanced level guitarists.

They also update their music library regularly with brand new modern songs with step by step chord tutorials how to learn the songs.

Guitar Tricks offers a 14 day free trial that is well worth checking out to see what they offer. I would consider trying the free trial and look through the online program. It is quiet impressive.

Patience

I mentioned above that there’s a slow way and a fast way to learning guitar by yourself. However, no matter which way you choose to learn; you will require some patience and perseverance.

Teaching yourself guitar at home is enjoyable; but can be difficult and stressful at the same time. Especially in the beginning.

There will be times where you will be fit to break the guitar; you will be swearing and become frustrated. It happens to everyone.

But, don’t worry this is a barrier you will pass through quickly. After a few weeks you will see some improvement and you will notice your skills progressing nicely.

Commitment

If you want to learn guitar on your own, you need to be committed. If you do set aside time to learn, you will not be successful in learning yourself.

What I suggest you do is set aside short time segments like 20-30 minutes a few times a week.

Can you do long practice sessions once a week for a few hours instead? Yes of course; but you will be better of learning in shorter more frequent sessions. In the beginning at least.

By doing shorter more frequent practice sessions, you will be building your muscle memory which will make finger placement and learning to play chords a lot easier at the start.

Can You Learn Guitar On Your Own?

Yes, you can learn guitar on your own. With the right strategy, commitment and patience of course, you should be able to learn guitar quickly.

I would recommend you try a Guitar Tricks Free Trial to give you a good idea on the fundamentals of learning guitar and get you on the right path teaching yourself how to play correctly.
