Can You Learn to Sing at Any Age?

If you’re reading this article, then deep down you know you were born to sing. It’s just that people keep telling you that it’s too late, you’re too old, and a whole lot more blah blah blah. Can you learn to sing at any age? Absolutely. If you can talk, you can sing. Simple as that.

Our modern Western mindset has us thinking that if you’re not successful by the time you’re hitting your early twenties, you won’t make it.

The truth is that singing is not about age. It’s about how passionate and motivated you are, and whether you have the opportunity to practice.

Am I Too Old To Sing?

Am I Too Old To Sing?

Being Too Old To Sing is a Big Fat Lie!

Okay, so watching those tiny little tots singing with perfect pitch on America’s Got Talent might leave you feeling overawed.

But a big part of the reason they’re singing so well is the training they’ve put in, not their age.

It doesn’t matter if you’re 6 or 60, if you put in some effort, you’ll definitely be able to sing.

Think of some of the best-known stars of all time. Remember, Leonard Cohen? He didn’t become successful until he hit 50. Yes, 50!

Ask yourself a few simple questions:

  • Do you hum and sing to yourself every time you hit the shower?
  • Do you find yourself singing along to all your favorite songs every time you hear them on the radio or TV?
  • Do you go through your day at home doing chores while humming?

I’m guessing you said yes to all three. And if you did, so what if you’re 70? You are already singing anyway.

Just put in a bit of effort into training your voice, and you’ll be hitting the next level faster than you may think possible.

Is It Too Late To Make A Career Out Of Singing?

Can You Learn to Sing at Any Age?

“It’s too late for me to start a career singing”

Says who?

Fact. Bill Withers of the “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean on Me” fame didn’t release his first album until he was 34 years old.

Fact. Country diva Sheryl Crow didn’t get a hit single until she was 32. And there are so many more musicians that have struggled at first before succeeding.

The point is that success in singing isn’t about age. It’s good old hard work, and a little luck. So if a singing career is what you want, go for it! Everyone has to start somewhere, and nobody made it to the top overnight.

I Tried Before, and It Didn’t Work, What’s Changed?

There are several reasons that singing may not have worked for you before. Maybe it was just the wrong timing, and you couldn’t focus and practice enough. Or maybe you were trying too hard and just burnt yourself out and lost motivation.

Singing is not like sports. It’s not a case of push yourself harder and faster, and you’ll get better. Quite the opposite. It’s all about achieving a balance in the different aspects that contribute to your voice.

Are you ready to sing now?

  • Do you feel the music just waiting to explode inside your soul?
  • Do you have time to dedicate to regular practice sessions?
  • Can you access some kind of singing lessons or resources?

If you answered yes to all three, you are 100% ready to take your singing to the next level. And even if you answered no to the third, you can start on your own while you find a way to take some classes.

But I Can’t Even Sing On Pitch…

Okay. This one I’ll grant you. That is a bit of a roadblock. But not an insurmountable one. There is this myth going around that if you can’t sing on pitch, you’re tone-deaf.

The thing is that most people can learn to sing on pitch. It just takes some practice!

The reason singing on pitch can be hard is because you need someone listening on the side to tell you if you’re hitting the note right or not.

Fear not. Did you know you don’t need lessons to sound good?

If you can’t get to a voice coach to help you, there are apps available that will help sort you out.

And with a bit of digging, you can find plenty of great free exercises online to learn how to sing on pitch.

You may not have been born with as much innate talent as someone like Michael Jackson, but you can make it if you work hard enough.

I Wanna Sing, But My Voice Cracks on Me

This one, we can’t just push away. It’s true; old age can do that to your voice. Your voice is a result of your vocal cords, and when they grow older, they get more fragile. Your voice starts to crack as they weaken.

Hopeless, right? WRONG. Back up a little bit. What do you do if you get a back injury? You go to a physiotherapist, who’ll give you exercises to strengthen your back and prevent any further injuries.

Same story with your voice. It’s a muscle, and you can train it to become stronger and better. Many of the things that cause it to crack, a good voice coach will be able to do away with. And for the really serious stuff, you can visit a speech-language pathologist.

Is It Too Late To Get Voice Lessons?

No, you are never too old to get voice lessons, even if you are a complete beginner. Maybe you want to join your local choir or get better at karaoke.

You can do a quick google search for some vocal lessons near you. Drop them a message and what there rates are.

In my opinion, I think vocal lessons are better for more intermediate or advanced level singers to get them to the next level.

If you are a beginner, online singing lessons are the best option to build up your voice to a basic standard at least.

Okay, But I Won’t Ever Be Able to Sing Like Mariah Carey

No. No, you won’t. But who says you have to? It’s great to have an idol and love the way they sing. But remember, you are an individual, and so is your voice. We all have limitations.

Not everybody’s vocal range is the same, and some voices are so much more powerful than others, no matter what you do.

Learn to love your voice for its uniqueness. Experiment with different singing techniques and styles until you find what works for you. Of course, you should work to make your voice better, but be realistic.

It Ain’t Age; It’s Hard Work!

Yep, that’s the simplest way to sum it up. It’s not innate talent, and nothing to do with age. It’s good old hard work.

Sure, some folk have it easier than others. But you’re not born with it, you learn it. If you can talk, you can sing.

So throw all those age-old excuses (excuse the pun) out the window and get down to work! It doesn’t matter if you wanna go pro or you’re just singing for the pleasure of it.

It’s NEVER too late to start!
