How To Learn Violin By Yourself | 4 Things You Need To Do

Ok, I’m going to jump straight to it. You will sound like crap for awhile. It’s not your fault, It’s just the way it is. You will need some patience and be willing to put in the work. Here’s my tips on how to learn violin by yourself.

Oh, and this isnt going to be your Wiki How tips to learn violin type of post. Let’s be honest, it’s so unrealistic.

You are not going to learn violin by looking at 14 cartoon images with a paragraph of text, and then all of a sudden pick up and play the violin. It’s not going to work that way.

I have kept it pretty simple. Here are my 4 steps how how to teach yourself violin.

Get A Violin

If you want to learn violin by yourself, you will need to get out and buy one to learn. You will need access to one whenever you want.

There’s plenty of places to pick up a violin. Amazon is a brilliant place to buy a violin for beginners. Why? Amazon reviews.

Amazon in my opinion is the best place to buy violins. You are spoilt for choice with some of the worlds top brands, but more importantly, the reviews. You read what people just like you thought about their violin purchase, would they recommend it, etc.

If you need a violin, I would suggest trying amazon.

Get An Online Course

To be honest, going full cold turkey teaching yourself violin will not be easy. You will at least some kind of help. The best thing to do is get an online course.

If you are searching how to teach yourself violin, it’s safe to say you don’t want to go spend a lot of money on violin lessons.

And unlike piano or guitar lesson, violin lessons aren’t as plentiful. There’s a good chance there’s not one in your locality, or a good violin teacher at least.

I know you might be thinking I can do this all on my own with some youtube tutorial, and maybe you can. But it will take a lot longer. You should really consider getting an online course.

With online violin lessons you will follow a structured learning program that will teach you how to play as if you were getting one to one lessons. Without the crazy expenses that one to one lessons actually cost.

It’s important you find a course that works for you and fits your budget. But I cannot stress it enough that the proper violin instruction at the beginning will benefit you in the long wrong.

With the right instruction you will learn the basics correctly from the beginning and avoid any bad habits. Even holding the violin incorrectly can affect your playing performance.

Udemy is a great place to find some online course. I would recommend this one HERE. It’s highly rated and has a lot of reviews.

With a 4.6/5 rating and over 300 reviews, these guys are doing something right. Here’s an idea on what you will learn with this course.

Patience

This is probably the most difficult one. Learning the Violin is a lot harder than learning piano or guitar I think.

Why? Because you will sound awful for a lot longer and it’s hard to stay motivated.

For the first few weeks you will not be sounding great, but you will see improvement. Once your timing and tempo start to improve, you will notice a big difference in your sound quality.

Patience here to the main obstacle in your way. Not learning how to play, but the patience in learning to play.

A lot of people chuck the violin in the bid after a few weeks, and they can be so close to getting it right.

Practice

Like I said, I wasn’t going to give you 14 tips to teach yourself the violin and you just pick up a violin and play. It’s not like that. You will need to work hard and put in the hours to learn.

I’m not saying you need to be locked in your room for 10 hours a day, but you need to set aside some time to learn.

I suggest 20-30 minutes a day for the first few weeks. If you can commit this time you will see some quick improvement.

Why? Because you finger placement, tempo, muscle memory will all become more in sync naturally as you are doing it everyday.

Rather than playing 2-3 hours straight once a week, you will find that you will be playing catch up from the week before.

You will notice if you play everyday your confidence will grow and you will be more natural.

How To Learn Violin By Yourself

Like I said, this wasn’t going to be a 14 step guide with cartoon picks to instantly make you learn violin. It just doesn’t work like that.

Learning to play violin is much harder than let’s say Guitar or Piano. But it’s more unique and uncommon. Violin really has a touch of class and you can be proud you can play it, even prouder if you can teach yourself violin.
