How to Sing from Your Diaphragm

You want to learn how to sing from your diaphragm. The following steps will help you learn to do just that. Your diaphragm is a muscle. If you don’t use this muscle often or intentionally, it may be hard at first. However, with time and practice, you can use this muscle to sing from your diaphragm. Diaphragm Location

Breathing

The first thing you’ll want to do is place your hand on your diaphragm and monitor it as you breathe in and out. The best way to breathe into your diaphragm is by filling your lungs and allowing your stomach to extend.  This is a good sign your diaphragm is being engaged 

How To Breathing Exercises  

When doing a breathing exercise, your posture is of the utmost importance. In order to ensure you are learning how to sing from your diaphragm properly, be sure to stand up or sit up straight. Having a correct posture does not equal tenseness. This means you should still feel relaxed. Relax your shoulders, arms, and face in order to complete the following breathing exercises. 

To perform diaphragm breathing exercises, inhale deeply for 4 to 5 seconds, hold for 4 to 5 seconds, and breathe out for 4 to 5 seconds. You should do this at least 5 to 10 times before beginning other diaphragm singing prep exercises. Doing this before you start your singing preparation exercises will help you open up your diaphragm and warm it up as you would do any other muscle. This will also help you build up stamina and sing longer in one breath.  

Daily Breathing Exercises  

When practicing breathing exercises, you must do this every day. Opening up your diaphragm and increasing your stamina will not happen overnight. Your diaphragm is a muscle and must be worked out periodically in order to increase its strength. Incorporate these breathing exercises at least twice a death. To help you stick to this daily routine, write it down, or put it in your schedule.  

Different Positions  

You can try the previously mentioned breathing exercises in different positions in order to get the best out of a breathing routine. You should lay down on the floor or bed for this routine. Do whichever feels most comfortable and lay flat on your back. Stretch out your rib cage and commence the previously mentioned. This position will open your diaphragm up even more.

Warming Up  

After you open up your diaphragm, it is important to warm up your voice. You should do this by ensuring your throat is hydrated and your vocal cords are warmed up. Posture  

Your posture is important when breathing and is going to help you sing from your diaphragm better if you can hold your posture correctly. For correct posture, sit up or stand up straight. You should be relaxed, however. Be sure to relax your face, shoulders, arms, and backs. Slouching can cause your diaphragm to be compressed, so posture is of the utmost importance. Make sure your posture is perfect before starting your singing exercises. 

Vowel Exercise 

Try doing singing and talking exercises to exercises and warm up your diaphragm and vocal cords. Try making the sound of the vowels, which are A, E, I, O, and U. Try projecting these vowels out from your diaphragm. These vowels are smooth and will allow you to sing continuously without interruption. Doing this in the right posture will give you an understanding of how open your diaphragm is already and how far you need to go to learn how to sing from your diapram.  

Open Throat  

When singing from your diaphragm, you need to ensure all of the pathways are open. The vibrations of sound will need a clear space to get through in order for you to truly understand the capacity of your voice and diaphragm singing ability. The openness of your throat can change the sound of your voice. Learning how to open your throat in singing warm-ups will help you learn how to better control your singing voice.   

Articulate  

One of the most important factors of singing is clarity. By ensuring your voice is clear and you are articulating your words or pronouncing words in a certain way, you will sound better as a singer.
