Learning to Sing in Key

Do you need a guide on learning to sing in key? We can help you out with that. This article is meant to provide you with a brief set of suggestions about learning how to sing in key.

It will help you work on your ability to sing in key, and with practice, it will be a skill you internalize!

Let’s dive in and learn about four exercises designed to help you sing in key.

Exercise 1: Piano

If you have a piano or keyboard, this exercise will be very helpful.

Have a seat at your piano or keyboard and pick a note that is in the middle of your range. Now listen to the note very carefully as it is played, singing it back.

It’s OK to play the note a few times and listen before trying to imitate it. You can enrich this exercise further by playing the base note, and then trying to sing intervals of one-third and then one-fifth away from that note.

Do you find yourself returning to the base note with accuracy? If the answer is no, figure out what is going wrong. Could you be flat or sharp? Is it a technical error?

Singers of all levels should make use of this exercise on a regular basis to make sure they are in tune.

Exercise 2: Use an App

With tablets, phones, and laptops in every household, we can learn to sing in key using devices we already have. Ear training can take place anywhere you need it to.

SingTrue is an excellent app for iOS users and has over a dozen exercises that help you learn how to sing.

Your confidence will be increased, and thanks to the advanced signal processing, your singing will be analyzed, and you can adjust accordingly, plus get feedback on your performance.

PocketPitch is a good app for Android and iOS users. You can use this free app to find the right notes, even if you don’t have a piano around. This app excels at helping you practice at identifying/listening for the correct notes.

It’s an excellent way to stay in practice whether you’re at home, on break at work, or just looking to pass the time.

Exercise 3. Hire A Voice Coach

Apps are great, and virtual learning is necessary for many reasons, but having a voice teacher to rely upon will be your greatest asset in learning how to sing in key.

Thankfully you can go to a voice coach in person, or you can learn over the internet thanks to video chatting.

A good voice teacher will help you understand the importance of good posture and help you eliminate bad habits that are affecting your singing ability.

He or she can help you train your voice, your ears, and help you boost your musical knowledge along with your vocal growth.

After all, the ability to hear correctly (ear training) is the most important skill of all. It is a critical step in your learning how to sing. You have to know what you’re looking for if you’d like to replicate it accurately!

It will lead to you being a much more enjoyable singer to listen to, and the positive words you get from your coach and peers will encourage you to keep at it.

It doesn’t need to be one to one lessons with a vocal coach either. Online singing lessons have become extremely popular recently.

There are many ways to do this. Most of us will use our smartphones or tablets to record our singing. You might even be fortunate enough to have recording equipment in your home, which is also a great option.

No matter how you do it, recording yourself and seeing how you are doing will help immensely. Record your practices and lessons. Listen to them after the session is over.

Examine how you do during specific exercises. For example, scales and arpeggios: how are your intervals? Are they accurately tuned?

If your coach is helping, are you in tune with their piano playing?

Find out your weak spots and find ways to correct any mistakes you are making. Save the recordings so you can keep track of your progress as time goes on.
