Best Way to Learn Piano on Your Own

Ok, so you want to learn the piano. But you want to know what is the best way to learn piano on your own? It’s a lot easier than you think. I have a few tips and some recommendations to get you started right away.

These steps are easy to follow and in my opinion are the best way to learn piano on your own.

1. Get an Online Piano Course

Now I can assume that you don’t want to get one to one lessons; since you are googling the best way to learn piano on your own? Right?

Good idea! Because in my opinion one to one lessons are no longer the norm; nor are they required anymore.

One to one lessons are boring, expensive and can take you a lot longer to learn to play the piano.

A good online piano course is the quickest, cheapest, and best way to learn to play piano yourself.

We are living in a modern era now where everything is online and more accessible.

You can learn from your laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

By following an online piano course, you are learning the same way you would by working with a piano instructor.

But you are learning in the comfort of your own home and on your schedule.

This will make you stick with it in the beginning.

Now I’m not saying you can’t use YouTube to teach yourself piano, but it will take longer and be much harder.

The reason being is it’s hard to find the right instructor that does it for free.

Most of the instructors drip feed you some free content before eventually needing some subscription or payment for their course or further instruction.

It’s also hard to find lessons that are structured in a way for you to learn to play correctly.

You might need to flick through various YouTube channels to make it work and mix and match different lessons.

Like I said; Yes you can learn to teach yourself piano with YouTube.

But is it the best way? No, I wouldn’t say so in my opinion.

Why Are Online Lessons Better?

Well, first of all, you will learn to play a lot quicker.

Rather than meeting an instructor once a week or fortnight, you are in control.

There’s no restrictions to time or location like you would with one to one lessons.

You can fly through your online piano course and learn to play the piano quickly.

You can do 1 hour a week or 20 hours a week.

The more time you put into learning; the quicker you will play.

Second, you will save a lot of money. One to one piano lessons are not cheap. You will be expected to pay around $50-$100 per hour.

$75 (average) x 20 Lessons = $1500

The thing is, those 20 lessons might not be enough either. Which makes the costs go up even more.

Whereas an online piano course like Piano For All will cost you only $39 for a one-off payment (using our discount button below).

That’s cheaper than one single piano lesson.

I won’t go into too much detail on it, but if you want to know more, I would read my Piano For All Review Here.

An online piano course like Piano For All in my opinion is the best way to learn the piano on your own.

With over 250,000 students worldwide; they do seem to know what they are doing. Here’s a sample lesson below.

2. Get A Piano

Fairly obvious I know.

But the reason I mention it is because it’s what stops people from taking the leap and starting to learn to play piano.

A lot of people start to procrastinate and don’t follow through and acquire a piano or keyboard. Don’t Do That!.

If you stuck on trying to find a Piano or keyboard, I would head over to Amazon and check out some of the most popular pianos/keyboards.

If you still aren’t sure; one piano/keyboard that’s always recommended and very popular is the Yamaha P45 (Full Review Here).

Remember, you don’t necessarily need to buy one.

Ask a friend who plays guitar; they might have a spare.

Two other great options are Craigslist and local garage sales.

These are cheap and easy to find. If you go onto Craigslist and look under ‘Music Instruments’ you will find some cheap options and often you will see some free listings.

However, for me, if I was serious about learning, I would rather get something that would last me a few years at least.

3. Commit Yourself

I can tell you all the best ways to learn piano on your own, but these are useless unless you put in the time.

There is no magic ingredient or special trick that will change that.

The more time you put into learning, the quicker you will learn to play. Simple as that.

20 Minutes A Day is All You Need!!

20 minutes a day for a few weeks is all you need to start seeing some amazing progress.

Now you might think you don’t have the time, but the reality is that everyone has the time.

It’s what you do with it matters.

20 minutes a day, or even a couple days a week is nothing.

That’s not even a full episode on Netflix.

In a 1 hour Netflix show you’d fit in x3 20 minute lessons.

Do your best to commit yourself to putting in the practice.

Trust me, once you start seeing progress, and you will; it becomes addictive.

4. Be Patient

Learning to play the piano on your own isn’t easy.

It can be hard at the beginning to get through that learning plateau, where you feel you are making more noise than actually playing music.

But, that happens to everyone when they start learning to play.

All you need is the stick with it for the first few days and you will see some progress.

I mentioned already, Piano For All.

They say and their students’ testimonials also say that you can ‘Sound Good’ in a matter of days.

5. Enjoy It

Try not to take it too seriously. Once you get through the basics and start playing; you will start to enjoy playing this amazing instrument.

Learning to play piano is a brilliant life skill you will have; and a skill many have wished they took the time to learn.
