JamPlay Review: How Does It Work?
JamPlay is one of the leading online guitar lesson programs that’s been around now for quite some time.
JamPlay isn’t just for beginners. It’s also good for immediate and more season guitarists looking to get to the next level; and let’s not forget bass players.
For this review, I’m going to assume most of you are beginners or at least novice guitarists and are reading this JamPlay Review to start learning guitar.
Getting Started With JamPlay
When you log in to you you will be shown your JamPlay Dashboard. This is where you can track your progress, navigate around their site, start lessons, watch live lessons, or go to the JamPlay community forum.
The User Dashboard is great for checking out the latest JamPlay news, new courses and videos, and also their upcoming Live Courses.
Phase 1: Beginner Lessons
When you click the ‘Lessons’ on the drop-down menu, click on the ‘Phase 1 (Beginners) tab. From here you be here you will be directed the all the beginner lessons for both guitar and bass.
What I do like here right away is how they split the lessons into Acoustic and Electric so you are learning on the right one you are interested in right away.
Beginners always seem to be naturally more interested in learning one or the other. For example, if you like rock music, you will nearly always want to jump straight into learning electric guitar.
My only gripe here is that for a complete beginner this page can be a little overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, I love that JamPlay is offering you a choice of instructor and length of the course; but it can be difficult to decide where to start.
Look at a few of the instructors’ bio’s and lessons to see if anyone of them seem to be stand out to you.
If you are unsure where to start, I would go with Steve Eulberg. His lesson plan is thorough and split into quick short lessons that can be done daily.
The short lessons are also easier to stay focused. You can watch a short lessons a few times, perfect it and then progress to the next one.
His lessons are easy to follow and perfect if you are the type of person who is busy, Not to worry. 20 -30 minutes a day is all you need to work through these lessons.
Some of his lessons are only around 5 minutes long. So you can watch it, repeat it and learn it very quickly.
The lesson dashboard is brilliant. The videos are high-quality HD which can also be adjusted if you wanted to.
What I thought was very useful was the tabs below the video. You can use these to take personal notes that are saved on your user profile; so you don’t need to jot notes down on paper only to lose them next week.
You can also post comments on the lesson and also ask the teacher a question you have. This is useful if you were struggling with something.
Phase 1 here for beginners works the same way if you want to learn Bass. You select your instructor and follow the same process as I mentioned above.
The video lessons have some awesome features like looping, slow motion, fast playback, and video bookmarking. The quick looping and slow-motion are particularly useful.
For example; you are learning some of your first guitar cords and it’s taken you about 30 seconds to position your fingers correctly and now you need to replay the video.
Not to worry, you can set a loop and keep hold of your guitar to make sure you get that cord just right. The loop feature is very handy and will be used a lot, especially in the beginning.
Phase 2: Advanced & Genre Specific Lessons
Now we are skipping ahead here a little. Assuming you complete Phase 1 and you are starting to see some real progress, you will then look at some more advanced and genre-specific lessons.
Again Phase 2 works the same for both Guitar and Bass. Simply click the ‘Bass’ yellow-colored tab you get Bass related videos.
Phase 2 has a lot of content. The easiest way to explain it is by breaking it into two sections.
- Genre-Based Lesson Sets
- Skill Building Lesson Sets
Genre-based lesson sets give you the option to learn to play the guitar-specific to a particular music genre; and you have plenty to choose from.
You can choose from Blues, Finger-Style, Metal, Rock, Hawaiian Slack Key, Celtic, County, and more. The list goes on and on.
No matter type of music you are into; you will find something here for you. The depth of music genres they covered impressed me a lot, to be honest.
Once you click on any of these genres, there’s a drop-down for the more instructors offering lessons tailored for that particular genre.
This isn’t a complaint as such as I know JamPlay has been around for a long; but the amount of content is pretty crazy.
This can vary by the type of Genre you choose. For example Rock, Blues, and Fingerstyle have a lot of instructors to choose from. Whereas as Celtic and Metal only have a few.
Here’s an example of the Rock Instructors you can choose from. One thing I liked here was how they mention the average time per lesson.
If you have short attention spans, the shorter lessons time might be better suited to you or if you prefer long practice sessions, maybe the longer lessons are better suited to you. The choice is yours.
Phase 3: Songs
Phase 3 is where you can learn to play your favorite songs. JamPlay offers a lot of songs you can learn, however they do not have a whole lot of modern songs.
Guitar Tricks & Fender Play do offer some more modern songs to their library; but I think JamPlay is a far superior platform than Fender Play in my opinion.
However, it does give the edge to Guitar Tricks in this department. Guitar Tricks have a better song list in my opinion.
You can filter the song list by genre, skill level, and even length of the training. An instructor will then walk you through the chords step by step.
Phase 4: Song Writing
Phase 4 is probably a section that a lot of people won’t get to or have any interest in, but you never know.
But, I do appreciate the lengths JamPlay go to to cover every aspect of playing the guitar and bass.
If you are aspirations of playing in a band or starting a solo career, this can be something you might find very useful.
You get plenty of instructors to choose to help you learn the art of writing a song from the heart.
A nice touch here is how they also give you the option to target your songwriting niche to either Electric or Acoustic guitar. Although the latter has a lot more lessons available.
These lessons are great. The instructor teaches you the right way to write the lyrics, create the chords, and put the two together.
Songwriting has grown a lot in popularity among the younger generations now with it so much easier to blow up online with Social Media.
There’s 1000’s of originals uploaded daily to YouTube, Instagram, and even TikTok. It only takes one of them to gain traction and go viral.
Live Lessons
I love how JamPlay never stops evolving and creating value for its users. You can jump on at any time and you will find live lessons with an instructor being broadcasted to the JamPlay Community.
The live lessons are a great way to connect and play along with others learning guitar at home just like you.
As you can see from the image above, Jam Play runs several live lessons every day. Once you build up some confidence, don’t be shy to jump onto one of these.
JamPlay Supported Devices
You can use JamPlay on pretty much any device you like. You can use it on any Apple or Android Devices, PC or Mac, Games Console, Apple & Amazon Tv, and of course a Smart Tv.
I think a laptop or tablet is best; because its easier to take notes on during the lesson video and save them to your profile.
Is JamPlay Any Good?
JamPlay is without a doubt one of the best online guitar lessons you can try right now. JamPlay is your very own instructor right there in your living room; but for a fraction of the cost.
JamPlay has been around since 2006. They have accumulated 6500+ video lessons; 450 courses and currently work with 100+ instructors combining over 4000 years of experience – I think they know what they’re doing.
I mentioned earlier that amount of instructions and lessons they offer can be a little overwhelming; but it’s also a good thing.
By having several instructors to choose from; you can find one that connects with you and you find it easier to follow.

Fender Play also has an option to learn bass; but I think JamPlay’s online bass lessons are much better.
For one you get a hell of a lot more content. It still amazes me how many lessons JamPlay has created.
With new lessons, complete courses, and of live lessons added regularly you will never run out of new content to learn.
Is JamPlay good for learning Bass? Yes 100%.
What Does JamPlay Cost?
